Walking in Madeira

Madeira is famous as a walkers paradise, for a variety of reasons:

  • Temperate climate due to its geographical position and terrain.
  • Dramatic landscapes, product of its volcanic origins.
  • Lush Subtropical vegetation and Europe's oldest Laurel Forests.

These types of landscapes are usually inaccessible to most walkers due to rough terrain and dense vegetation. Madeira however has an irrigation system, the 'levadas' which crisscross the island taking water to where it is most needed. The footpaths that follow the 'levadas' provides a superb walking environment, as you follow the water around the island through laurel forest, over peaks and mountains through tunnels and under waterfalls.

Nature Meetings will help you explore the island's natural treasures, providing you with experienced and certified guides who will share with you the island's natural history.

Enjoy breathtaking scenery and unspoiled endemic flora and fauna, the exciting walking programmes will give you full contact with nature at its best. Beautiful hues of green surrounded by the blue of the sky as it meets the deep Atlantic.

Our aim is to provide you with a fantastic walking experience which will have you coming back for more.
